general expertise and its relevance for the project
Professor Brooks Keeshin is a clinician-researcher specialising in child and adolescent psychiatry, child abuse pediatrics, childhood trauma, traumatic stress, maltreatment and suicide prevention. His research focuses particularly on the early detection of and response to traumatic stress and suicide risk among children and adolescents who have experienced maltreatment or other forms of childhood trauma.
He leads a United States-based research team that has developed a validated process for systematically identifying and responding to traumatic stress and suicide risk in healthcare and Barnahus settings. His work also includes international research collaborations in Europe and Africa.
His expertise is directly relevant to the VOICE project’s aims of improving the early identification of trauma- and ACE-related distress and creating effective pathways from identification to appropriate care. His experience in trauma screening, pediatric healthcare, suicide prevention, integrated service models and implementation in child-focused settings will contribute to the development, adaptation and evaluation of the project’s school-based identification and access-to-care pathway.
other responsibilities
- Director of Pediatric Integrated Post-trauma Services, PIPS, a SAMHSA-funded centre within the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
- Director and co-developer of the Utah Psychotropic Oversight Program, UPOP.
- Medical Director responsible for the integration of Measurement-Based Care within the Behavioral Health Clinical Program at Intermountain Health.
- Co-chair of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Child Maltreatment and Violence Committee.
- Member of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Healthy Mental and Emotional Development.
- Principal or senior investigator in research and projects funded by SAMHSA, PCORI, NIMH and the State of Utah in the areas of trauma and suicide prevention.
additional information
- Board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Child Abuse Pediatrics.
- Internationally recognized expert in child abuse pediatrics, trauma-informed care, and the mental health consequences of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
- Provides specialist clinical care for children and adolescents exposed to abuse, neglect, maltreatment, interpersonal violence, and other traumatic experiences.
- Leads research integrating child abuse pediatrics, trauma, genetics, and suicide prevention to improve early identification and intervention for vulnerable children and adolescents.
- Has extensive experience implementing systematic screening, trauma assessment, and response pathways for childhood traumatic stress and suicide risk within paediatric healthcare and Children's Advocacy Center (Barnahus) settings.
- His work bridges clinical practice, research, and implementation, translating evidence-based trauma assessment into routine healthcare and multidisciplinary systems of care.
- Has extensive experience collaborating across healthcare, child protection, foster care, juvenile justice, and multidisciplinary child advocacy services to improve access to care.
- Has contributed to international research collaborations in Europe and Africa, including projects involving refugee children and adolescents in Sweden.
